There are plenty of crystals to choose from. But if you’re a beginner, there are also a few to avoid.
If you’ve read our beginner’s guide to crystals, you’ll know that some of the crystals we recommend for beginners are Citrine, Rose Quartz, and Amethyst.
These crystals are gentle, yet powerful, and are easy to use.
But a lot of people still want to know which crystals to avoid for beginners, so today, we’re sharing three crystals you might want to set aside until you feel more confident with your crystal practice.
3 Crystals to Avoid for Beginners
1. Moldavite
Moldavite is an intensely powerful stone that induces rapid change to its owner. On top of the rapid change people experience using Moldavite, lots of people claim physical effects from using Moldavite like hot flashes and a racing heart. For this reason, crystal practitioners have dubbed Moldavite as a dangerous stone, but in truth, it’s actually not dangerous, it’s just incredibly powerful.
While we love Moldavite, it’s a crystal beginners may want to avoid until they feel ready. However, there’s another crystal you can turn to if you’re looking for gentle transformation and change: Amethyst.
Amethyst is a stone many are familiar with and are drawn to when first getting into crystals. It’s a powerfully protective stone that packs a punch.
Amethyst encourages positive transformation in your life by alleviating stress and anger, giving you balance, calming/healing your mind and providing you with positivity. If you aren’t sure which stone to start with, Amethyst is a wonderful stone for beginners.
And unlike Moldavite, which can induce rapid change, Amethyst works gently.
2. Seraphinite
Seraphinite is another powerful crystal for beginners to avoid until they feel comfortable using crystals. Seraphinite will connect you to the spiritual world and raise your vibrations. Beginners may feel light-headed when using this stone as it can raise your vibrations rapidly.
If you want to connect to the spiritual world while raising your vibrations, consider using Celestite before trying Seraphinite.
Celestite’s calming vibrations are perfect for those who feel nervous connecting to the spiritual world. It can help you to see beyond the physical world and into the spiritual realm, and is said to connect people with their guardian angels so they can receive signs (like angel numbers) more easily.
3. Impactite
Last on the list of crystals to avoid for beginners is Impactite. Impactite is said to flush out all the negative emotions of its wearer upon first using it. For beginners or for people not used to dealing with their emotions, this can be incredibly overwhelming and taxing.
A gentle alternative to Impactite to remove energy blockages is Selenite.
We recommend beginners have Selenite in their collection as a multi-purpose crystal. Selenite is a gemstone that is known to have high vibration and is often used to remove negative energy. It is also said to be helpful in protecting the home and those who live there from harm.
And while Selenite has many wonderful healing properties for the wearer, it can also be used to cleanse the other crystals in your collection.
When Will You Be Ready For These Crystals?
Although we’ve put together this list to help beginners know which crystals they may not be ready for, take our advice with a grain of salt.
As a beginner, you can try and test whichever crystals you want. Some beginners take a liking to stones like Moldavite and use them frequently. Others find the stones on our list too strong and prefer stones with more gentle vibrations, which is why we’ve provided alternatives to each stone.
However, if you are a beginner and you want to test any of the above crystals and you’re feeling hesitant, we recommend doing so with a strong grounding stone, like Black Tourmaline. Black Tourmaline will protect you from any vibrations that might be too strong for you.
And if at any time you use these crystals and feel like they’re too much, simply put them away until you think you’re ready to give them another go.

Hi I have only just recently started to use crystals for healing so I am a new beginner and would like to make sure if I am using them correctly warmest wishes kymsummer
Welcome! I hope you find the resources on our site useful 🙂
I recently started using crystals, and I have quite a few in my collection now. I have found carnelian to be quite powerful, I definitely felt it’s effects, but it wasn’t a negative experience, quite the opposite actually, it was definitely very positive and I felt amazing the first time I used it. I have not had any negative experiences using any of my crystals.
Hi , I am a beginner crystal user . If I bring the crystal home and don’t feel comfortable what can I do with that ? Can I still keep it abandoned at home or what yo do if can’t return it
Yes – you can keep it tucked away in a pouch until you feel ready to use it.
